Understanding the Difference Between 304 and 316 Stainless Steel and Why It Matters

At St Clair Sheetmetal, one of the most common questions we get from clients, whether they’re building a commercial kitchen or renovating a home, is: What’s the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel?

It’s a great question, and one that can significantly impact the longevity, appearance, and performance of your final product.

As custom sheet metal fabricators with over 35 years of experience, we’re here to help you make informed decisions. Let’s break down the key differences between 304 and 316 stainless steel and help you understand when (and why) each one is used.

What is 304 Stainless Steel?

304-grade stainless steel is the most commonly used stainless steel in residential and commercial applications. It’s durable, easy to clean, and highly resistant to corrosion and oxidation under normal conditions.

We use 304 stainless steel in a wide range of applications, including:

  • Commercial kitchen benches
  • Splashbacks and benchtops
  • Domestic kitchen upgrades
  • Cabinetry cladding
  • General custom fabrication

Its strength, affordability, and hygienic properties make it ideal for food prep areas, while its polished finish offers a clean and professional look. For most indoor applications and sheltered spaces, 304 is more than sufficient.

What is 316 Stainless Steel?

316-grade stainless steel contains an additional element: molybdenum. This gives it an edge when it comes to corrosion resistance, particularly in environments exposed to salt, moisture, and harsh chemicals.

We typically recommend 316 stainless steel for:

  • Coastal homes or buildings
  • Outdoor kitchens and BBQ areas
  • Marine and boating applications
  • Medical or laboratory settings
  • Harsh industrial environments

If your project faces sea air, chlorine, or harsh cleaning agents, choose 316 for better durability and protection. 316 withstands tougher conditions over time, making it a durable, long-term investment.

Which One Should You Choose?

The right material depends on where and how your stainless steel piece will be used.

For indoor kitchens, restaurants, or commercial fit-outs, 304-grade is ideal. It offers durability, affordability, and great performance in low-corrosion settings.

For coastal homes, medical facilities, or outdoor spaces, 316-grade is worth the extra investment. It reduces the risk of rust, pitting, and discolouration.

Not sure which is best for your project? Don’t worry, we’ll guide you. At St Clair Sheetmetal, we offer expert advice and recommend the most appropriate materials based on your environment, budget, and performance needs.

Why Material Quality Matters

Choosing the right grade of stainless steel isn’t just a technical detail; it’s what ensures your project stays looking and performing at its best for years to come.

We use only premium Australian steel and hand-fabricate all our work in our Sunshine Coast workshop. That gives us full quality control, lets us perform precise TIG/MIG welding, and ensures a durable finished product, no matter which stainless grade you choose.
